Internships in Canada in 2026: Rules for International Students

An internship in Canada is not automatically authorized simply because a student holds a study permit. The rules depend on the student’s level of study, whether the placement is required by the program and the conditions printed on the permit.

Required placements in a Canadian program

A student work placement can include a co-op, internship, practicum or professional placement. For eligible post-secondary international students, it must be required to complete the program and confirmed by the designated learning institution (DLI). The student must have a valid study permit, be studying full-time in an eligible post-secondary program and ensure placements total no more than 50% of the program.

The April 2026 change

Since April 1, 2026, eligible post-secondary students no longer need a separate co-op work permit for a required placement. Secondary-school students still need a co-op permit. Second-language, general-interest and preparatory courses are not eligible for this student placement route.

Check permit conditions before starting

Before working, review the work authorization conditions printed on the study permit. If the required condition is missing, IRCC provides a process to add it before working and applying for a Social Insurance Number where required. Keep the institution’s letter confirming the placement is mandatory.

Students enrolled outside Canada

The post-secondary simplification concerns students enrolled at a Canadian institution. A student enrolled at a school outside Canada who wants an internship in Canada must confirm the applicable work-permit route before starting. An optional or ordinary job does not become a co-op placement simply because it is unpaid.
